Scything In The Barn

Scything In The Barn

Dr Richard Dutton, DDS, inside the barn on his Elkhart, Texas ranch. He is holding an antique scythe, or sickle, used for harvesting grain. He liked the antique lantern, so he threw that in there as well. The setup was pretty easy, except, for the back barn doors – they kept opening and closing as the wind blew. I used a Saberstrip light modifier with a SB600, camera left.

My New Dish

DIY Beauty Dish

The first shot with my new DIY Beauty dish.

This is just a simple shot of my wife, Denise, at the kitchen bar. I had to do a lot of convincing to get her to allow me to post this pic. She has a rule that I can’t post any pictures of her on flickr or my blog.

I love the nice shadows it produced. Next I am making a diffuser for the Dish. I can’t wait to use it a lot more.

Rick Sammon Tribute
Rick Sammon is a friggin’ awesome photographer! I saw that he is doing a Creative live workshop October 21st www.creativelive.com/courses/rick-sammon-photography-weekend
I REALLY wish I could attend. But, these events are extremely limited. I will definitely be watching online.

I loved his self-portrait on the CL website! So, I tried to create something similar for myself. I feel like I was able to get pretty close to his. set up here: www.flickr.com/photos/28336105@N03/5685807126/

Chocolate

I wanted to get a shot up today and I was running out of time. So, I put my SB600 in my softbox and used one of my favorite models. :) This is my chocolate lab, Dudley.

My yongnuo triggers and receivers came in on Friday. So, I have been toying around with them and my new lens, the 17-55 2.8DX.

This shot was taken with the Wescott Apollo overhead, camera right.

Martini

Martini
This was just an experimental shot for me. Glass is tough to shoot. Especially, since it is so reflective. My goal was to be able to shoot a martini glass and minimize the reflection of the light. I think the refection, or lack-thereof, came out pretty well. I put black board on either side of the glass. I then shot a single sb600 through a homemade snoot, onto a white background. I should have had larger black boards on either side of the glass to get the rim to show more.

Black[R]apid Outtake
This is one of the “outtake” shots I took of my brother-in-law for the BlackRapid, “Get Your Strp On” contest. It was the middle of the day, so the sun presented some challenges. I used a Westcott Apollo softbox to the left and a bare flash behind for keylight. Everything was fired with the nikon CLS system. This was also the first time I was able to use my new lens, the Nikon 17-55 2.8DX. I love this lens!!

Expecting

While down in the Bishop Arts District of Dallas, we found this expecting mom and her daughter. They were put in front of a window and I tried to overexpose the shot. It was more difficult than I thought it would be. I didn’t get any shots of her belly that I liked.

Chef Tony
This is Tony Gardizi, one of DFW’s top chefs. He was found taking a brief break from his restaurant, Decanter, in the Bishop Arts District. Being as we only had a few seconds, he was hit with a gold reflector and natural light.

(Not So)Old Friends
This is a shot of two best friends, Nancy and Kathy, that were part of a lightenupandshoot workshop. Both are artists and have their paintings in local galleries.

We went out to a field in Cedar Hill, TX for this shot. Westcott Apollo Softbox to the left.

This photo I was able to take just after dark in Oak Cliff, next to the Bishop Arts District, in Dallas. It was challenging getting the lighting right on the front porch. After several failed lighting attempts from other angles, we were told we could take just one more shot. I wanted to get a shot of the grandfather and his grandsons. This is what I was able to get with my final shot.

Saberstrip above and to the left of grandpa. Bare sb-28 firing at the kids on the porch.
